JII/OFP #03 I improved my Japanese and was able to enjoy intercultural exchanges! (Experiences of foreign participants)

What sparked your interest in the Otonari-san program?

I found this program through an internet search, and it mentioned on the JII homepage that it supports foreigners living in Japan, so I decided to apply. Since I work for a Korean company, I had very few opportunities to speak with Japanese people until then.

How did you interact with Otonari-san over the past 6 months?

I talked online once a week to study Japanese and learn about Japan. We also went out for lunch together, and I had the chance to enjoy Korean cuisine with Otonari-san's family, which made everyone very happy since we all love Korean food. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, especially spending time with Otonari-san's family.

Otonari-san has been very considerate of me and has actively tried to support me. When I caught a cold, I was really grateful that Otonari-san reached out to check on me when I was alone.

Have you experienced any changes in your daily life or within yourself since participating in the Otonari-san program?

I improved my Japanese by communicating with Otonari-san every week. Additionally, Otonari-san introduced me to Japanese culture, allowing me to learn about Japan's culture and food.

At first, there was some distance between me and Otonari-san, but later we became very close. I am grateful for the Otonari-san program that helps foreigners like me who live alone.

Also, after returning to Korea, I have come to want to help foreigners as well.

Do you have any advice for foreigners who are thinking about participating in the Otonari-san program in the future?

If you want to do something in Japan, I believe participating in this program will be very beneficial for you.
