Hanamaru Class

Supporting the Learning of Children with International Backgrounds

In households where Japanese is not the native language, parents often find it difficult to teach their children how to read and write in Japanese, which can potentially impact the children's future.

In the "Hanamaru Class," children enjoy learning Japanese reading, writing, and homework with volunteers, building their confidence in school life in Japan.

Hanamaru Class, which supports learning including Japanese language, is held twice a month on alternate Saturdays for children with foreign roots.

Children who are already attending elementary school, as well as those around 5 years old, can participate to ensure a smooth transition into Japanese elementary schools.
Learn Japanese in a fun, playful way while perfectly preparing for school enrollment!

Children attending international schools are also very welcome.
Many schools offer Japanese language classes, and by adding learning through the "Hanamaru Class," you can significantly boost your Japanese skills.

Together with Japanese Volunteers...

  • Practice Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji
  • You can do your school homework
  • You can ask questions about the parts you don't understand in your studies
  • Learn "Carefully and Clearly"

Event Overview

◾️Target: Children with foreign roots (approximately ages 5 to 4th grade in elementary school)
* For the first visit, please be accompanied by a guardian for registration.
* Children attending international schools are also welcome to participate.
◾️Event Schedule: Twice a month, every other Saturday, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM　
◾️Location: Tokushinkai Kobushien Social Welfare Corporation (6-18-2 Shimomeguro, Meguro-ku, Tokyo) *Facility Website
◾️Items to Bring: Writing utensils, study materials you want to work on, homework, drills, etc.
◾️ Participation Fee: 500 yen per session (fee reduction system available)
◾️Capacity: 8 participants per session (first-come, first-served; advance registration required)

Main Programs

Japanese volunteers provide thoughtful support in small groups, such as one-on-one sessions, tailored to each child's age and learning level.

◾️Preschool Children：Get comfortable with Japanese while having fun through hiragana and katakana writing practice, playing karuta games, and singing songs for early Japanese learners.
◾️Elementary School and Older: Children can bring any homework or study materials you want to work on independently.

Considering children's attention spans, we allocate about 40 minutes of learning time per person. Please arrive during the scheduled time.
