From April 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023, we have been conducting activities with the support of the Central Community Chest of Japan (CCCJ) grant for support activities for people with foreign roots (3rd round). Here, we present our activity report.
OFP is a communication support initiative that helps foreign residents adapt to Japanese society, deepens mutual understanding between cultures, and promotes cultural synergy.
In fiscal year 2022, the number of participants more than doubled compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 595. During the grant period, 91 new Otonari-san volunteers and 59 new foreign participants joined. Additionally, 66 people started pair activities, and 92 completed six months of activities. Regarding the reasons for participation, in addition to the traditional internet searches, "introductions by acquaintances" were frequently mentioned, spreading through word of mouth, and the number of participants who joined through acquaintances continues to increase. We held 18 program orientation sessions for participants.
Currently, foreign residents participating in the OFP come from over 40 countries and regions. This is generally proportional to the ratio of foreign residents living in Tokyo, and it is expanding as an initiative aimed at foreign residents.

We were able to learn about each other's culture while in Japan by inviting each other to our homes and sharing home-cooked meals.
I have come to realize that the elementary school communication notebooks, homework, and meetings with teachers that I have passed by without any questions are significant hurdles for foreigners who do not understand the language.
