How did you learn about the Otonari-san program?
Two years ago, a friend participated in this program. When I told her that I was struggling to understand various things in Japan, she told me about this program. After hearing about it, I thought it would be very helpful for foreigners who have lived in Japan for a long time. So, I checked the JII website and decided to participate in the program.
What motivated you to participate?
One reason is that I have the opportunity to ask any questions about daily life in Japan. The systems in Japan, such as banks and post offices, are particularly complex for me. Even if I consult my friends, they may not be knowledgeable about these matters. Additionally, there are systems designed for foreigners, so it would be helpful to have someone with experience who knows how to handle such issues. Having someone who can speak Japanese or provide interpretation was also very important to me.
How did you interact with Otonari-san over the six months?
We interacted online, went to cafes, and had lunch together. Our interactions were about half online and half in person. We met once a week, spending about an hour online and around two hours when we met for breakfast or lunch.
At that time, due to the COVID situation, we decided to meet half online and half in person. However, now that things have settled down, I believe we can build better relationships by meeting face-to-face, so I would like to meet in person more often from now on.
We talked about various topics, including daily life, my experiences living in Japan, and my life in Italy before coming here. Since she has an international background, she shared many stories about her experiences living abroad and her life after returning to Japan. Her parents also live overseas, so she understands the challenges of living in a foreign country. Therefore, discussions about life abroad became a common topic for us.
In addition to meeting regularly to talk, there were times when I would call for help if I encountered any difficulties.
Are there any memorable events or happy moments from your interactions with Otonari-san?
The happiest moment was when we went to a café together. The café was filled with blooming flowers and was a very beautiful place. We enjoyed afternoon tea together, and it was truly lovely with a great atmosphere, making it a very enjoyable day.
Another memorable experience was when we went to a Mexican restaurant together. We both love Mexican food, but it had been a long time since we last had it, so I was really happy to go together. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was very much like Mexico, so we had a great time. These two moments are what stand out the most to me.
How did Otonari-san support you?
When I was trying to open a bank account, it was not going well and took a long time. I don't think I could have opened the account without Otonari-san.
The bank did not send the card, but when I consulted Otonari-san, she taught me how to say in Japanese what I was struggling with in order to communicate with the bank. When I used the expressions Otonari-san taught me to inquire at the bank, they understood me, and I was able to receive the card. It had taken a long time until then, so I was very grateful.
How did your relationship with Otonari-san change and develop?
I think the relationship with Otonari-san developed very naturally. Of course, at first, there was some distance because we didn’t know each other, but she was very friendly, and since I am also friendly, it was very easy to open up. She has such a great personality that it might actually be harder not to become close with her. From the very first time we talked during the pairing-up interview, I immediately liked her, so I think we were compatible from the start. It was a very good pairing-up.
She was truly kind, and I never felt any issues or disagreements from start to finish. She always supported me, and being with her brings a sense of security and comfort.
We became close and decided to keep in touch even after the program ended. Even now, we go to cafes and have lunch together, and our relationship feels more like "friends" than just "Otonari-san." I think this is a very good program because it allows you to meet friends and deepen those relationships.
After participating in the Otonari-san program, have there been any changes in your daily life or yourself?
Participating in the OFP has given me the confidence that I can always ask for help if I encounter any difficulties. I have gained a sense of security and confidence while living in Japan.
I have a Japanese husband, but I sometimes feel reluctant to always consult him when I have problems. If I keep talking to him about daily life worries, it ends up being nothing but complaints, and when I talk with my husband, I want to discuss other things, like things we can enjoy together. So, having another person who can support me is truly a blessing. My Otonari-san is that source of emotional support for me.
Do you have any advice for foreigners who are thinking of participating in the Otonari-san program in the future?
Since Otonari-san will make efforts to support you, I think you should always keep your appointment times. Also, if for some reason you cannot meet, please inform them in advance by message. It is rude to keep the other person waiting and waste their time without doing so.
I hope that other foreigners can enjoy this program just like I do, and I want them to learn about Japanese culture and daily life while finding companions to connect with.
If you have a message for Otonari-san, please share it
I really enjoy interacting with Otonari-san. Thank you so much for always supporting me!
