What made you interested in the Otonari-san program?
I found this program through an internet search, and since the JII homepage said it "supports foreigners living in Japan," I decided to apply. I work for a Korean company, so until then, I had very few opportunities to talk with Japanese people.
How did you interact with Otonari-san over the six months?
We talked online once a week to study Japanese and I was taught about Japan. We also went out for lunch together, and I even went to eat Korean food with Otonari-san’s family. Everyone liked Korean food, which made me very happy. Including the time spent with Otonari-san’s family, it was a truly wonderful experience.
Otonari-san cared about me very much and actively tried to support me. When I caught a cold, Otonari-san contacted me and showed concern for me being alone, which I was very grateful for.
After participating in the Otonari-san program, have there been any changes in your daily life or yourself?
Since I communicated in Japanese with Otonari-san every week, my Japanese improved. Also, because Otonari-san introduced me to Japanese culture, I was able to learn about Japanese culture and food as well.
At first, there was some distance between Otonari-san and me, but later we became very close. I am grateful for the Otonari-san program that helps foreigners like me who live alone.
Also, after returning to Korea, I have come to want to help foreigners as well.
Do you have any advice for foreigners who are thinking of participating in the Otonari-san program in the future?
If you want to do something in Japan, I believe participating in this program will be very beneficial for you.
