We held the first class of the "Hanamaru Class," a learning support program for children with foreign roots, on Saturday, October 19.
This is an initiative that has been developed in response to requests from OFP foreign participants.
Since this was JII's first attempt, the secretariat approached it with excitement and a sense of tension.
This time, children aged 4 to 6 participated. At first, the little ones seemed nervous in the new environment, but when the volunteers, who joined as supporters, started singing Japanese songs like "It's about to start!" and "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes!", the atmosphere changed instantly. They began to jump and bounce around, having a great time.

After easing the tension, we engaged in various activities at our own pace, such as working on tasks and reading picture books together in Japanese.
And finally, let's all play a karuta game!
Afterward, we enjoyed snack time before parting ways.
In the Hanamaru class, one volunteer is assigned to every one or two children, allowing everyone to closely observe the children's behavior and provide support tailored to their age and Japanese language proficiency.
For example, this time we engaged with the children at their level, incorporating play while speaking Japanese. We also interviewed the parents in English about their child's daily activities, the topics we worked on today, and their current level of Japanese proficiency.
Parents actively shared their concerns and challenges with the volunteers, which allowed us to provide support tailored to each family's needs..
As the secretariat, I truly feel that JII is supported by amazing volunteers, and I can't help but think, "There are no other classrooms like this!" (laughs)
We hope to welcome many more children in the future, creating a lively and enjoyable environment where they can engage with the Japanese language!
